Alec Gibson (pictured), an M.D.-Ph.D. student in the UW Medical Scientist Training Program, his fiancé, Ted Gobillot, and a third student have created a new pathway at the UW School of Medicine: the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer/questioning) Pathway. This new pathway will join existing pathways in Hispanic and Indian health, care for the underserved and global health. Pathways, which allow students to explore specialized branches of medicine, add to the students’ knowledge in serving distinct communities. Gibson, who splits his time between pursuing research and working with medically underserved communities, hopes this new pathway will make doctors more comfortable in treating patients who identify as LGBTQ.
